Although there are already many books about Martin Luther King, Jr., this one has its own special place. Giving a brief history of the Civil Rights movement and a little information about King, the book focuses on the struggle for equal rights through peaceful means, using quotes from King to emphasize his beliefs. Duncan's narration, in a low, deep, strong voice, juxtaposes perfectly with the soft crooning of church and choral music in the background, and the marching music as the demonstrations begin. Likewise, the Caldecott Honor Award-winning illustrations combine soft watercolors with the jagged, sharp edges of cut-paper collage. A simple, yet powerful statement about King's beliefs, and his impact on the world, is made all the better by the blending of sight and sound.
